Law College Dehradun successfully organizes ‘First National Legal Essay Competition & Symposium’

Law College Dehradun, in collaboration with International Law Students Association (ILSA) Washington DC, organized its ‘First National Legal Essay Competition & Symposium’ in ILSA LCD Chapter on 13 August, 2018 under the aegis of Moot Court Society of the college. The International Law Students Association is a non-profit association of students and lawyers who are dedicated to the promotion of International Law. ILSA Chapter at Uttaranchal University aims to promote International Law; to encourage communication and cooperation among students and lawyers internationally; to contribute to legal education; to promote social responsibility in the field of law; to increase opportunities for students to learn about other cultures and legal system worldwide; and to publicize educational and career opportunities in international law.

The programme was inaugurated with the lighting of the auspicious lamp by Hon’ble Chancellor Shri Jitender Joshi, Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) N .K. Joshi, Principal & Dean Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, eminent Legal Luminaries of the nation who presided over the occasion as the Keynote Speakers and Dr. Poonam Rawat. The symposium was opened by Dr. Rajesh Bahuguna and the Vice Chancellor extended his cordial welcome and introduced Prof. (Dr.) K.C. Joshi – Former Vice Chancellor of Kumoan University and 1st Ph.D. Holder of Law from Kurukshetra University, Dr. Vinai Kumar – Deputy Director of ISIL, New Delhi, Dr. Risham Garg, Associate Professor at NLU, Delhi and Dr. Anurag Deep, Associate Professor ILI, Delhi as the panelists. The competition was themed on “International Law Regime” with ‘International Civil Aviation’, ‘International Maritime Law’, ‘International Economic Law’ and ‘International Humanitarian Law’ as sub-themes.

Dr. Risham Garg’s platonic discussion was on International Economic Law, its key concepts and issues. He discussed the various aspects of International Law and the key concerns of insolvency. It was also emphasized that it is very crucial to promote International trade and development for the economic and social growth of a nation. Dr. Vinai Kumar discussed on ‘Settlement of Disputes under the law of the sea’. He instilled the students to go beyond the text book to face the current issues. It is also essential to reinterpret the law according to the need of the hour. Various articles and disputes related to sovereignty of territories were also lucidly explained. Prof. (Dr.) K.C. Joshi, who has been in law profession for 58 years elucidated on ‘International Civil Aviation’. He dissertated on the issues related to terrorism and stressed that it is a crucial problem of human community and is vital to combat terrorism. He motivated the students to go for research based on empirical evidence. Dr. Anurag delivered a short and lucid speech on ‘International Humanitarian Law’. He also elaborated on Geneva Convention Act and role of India in it. This was followed by an open session of discussion where students questioned on various topics like, ‘Refugee Convention’, ‘Economic Law’ etc, which was explained in a comprehensive manner by the speakers.

National Legal Essay competition 2018 was also organized as a part of the symposium in which more than 300 students from reputed universities and colleges of the country participated. The competition had a colossal amount of Rs. 50,000 as cash prize for the winners and participation certificate for all those who submitted their essays.

Prof. (Dr.) N.K. Joshi opined that such academic events would envisage promoting and developing the ability of a student to think on a Global Legal Perspective. Dr. Rajesh Bahuguna stated that the theme has a global relevance to encourage the participant’s freedom to analyze and convey their thoughts and come out with probable solutions. The event ended with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Lakshman Singh Rawat, in which he extended his heartiest thanks to the panelists and congratulations to the members of Moot Court Society, the organizers of the event. Present on the occasion were all the Dean & Directors of Uttaranchal University along with the Faculty Members and students of Law College Dehradun.
