India’s Biggest Bridge Championship 2016: Workshop on Bridge designing

India’s Biggest Civil Championship (IBCC 2016) Workshop on bridge designing was conducted by Uttaranchal Institute of Technology on 6 & 7 of November 2015 in collaboration with IIT – Madras, and ARK Techno solutions – Mumbai. Uttaranchal University, Dehradun is selected as one of the Zonal Centers in India. During the workshop the students were introduced to various types of bridges and moving loads. This Training provided a unique opportunity to experience a hands-on feel of a Civil Engineering project. Participants designed and fabricated their own bridge and tested for the maximum load. The bridge model made by them were able to take up to 1000 times the self weight.

At the end of the workshop the students gained knowledge about the different types of bridges existing and structural response of bridges to different types of moving loads. They also learnt about load calculation in various truss using CAD model, fabrication of the bridge and testing for the maximum load taken to measure efficiency. During the practical session they came to know about the issues that arise while designing a bridge. The testing session was the most interesting part of this Training where the participant’s bridge was tested for maximum load to judge the maximum efficiency of the bridge.

The leading educationists of the country attended the symposium and gave detailed information to the class XII students about the current education scenario in the country and also discussed the various higher education options available to them after completing their schooling. The speakers interacted with the students and answered their queries.

Fifteen teams comprising  four members each participated in the competition. Subham Agarwal, Pankaj Dutt, Subham Nandwani and Bhupesh Danu stood first in the competition. Sarthak Gupta, Raunak Kumar, Gaurav Negi and Nitin Patak took the second position while Krishna Batt, Vineet Vishal Negi, Vishal Singh Batola and Kishore Chhetri stood third. These teams with maximum efficiency were given Best Design Award. Top performers including every participant in the Training were awarded merit certificates.

Hon’ble Chancellor Mr. Jitender Joshi inaugurated the workshop. In his inaugural address he said that such events would supplement the education of civil engineering students by give them comprehensive, student-driven project experience. Vice Chancellor, Prof S.C Joshi emphasized the importance of effective teamwork and project management to succeed in a competition as well as in profession.

The key note speaker  at the workshop was Mr. J.K. Pant, ex chief engineer PWD. He has got more than 40 years of rich experience in bridge designing, planning and construction management. He is the member of several professional institutions and has attended and organized several seminars and courses in various countries. In his speech Mr. Pant inspired the students by sharing the experience gained while handling several major projects.

Dr. Abhishek Joshi, Director, SA & IT services expressed his conviction that workshops of such kind will help increase awareness among the students about real-world engineering issues such as spatial constraints, material properties, strength, safety, cost, etc., said.

Ms Ankita Joshi, Director HR also stated that such workshops would be an opportunity for students to constantly update their technical and domain skills.

Dr. N.K. Joshi, Director UIT the organizer of the workshop,  in his address briefed about the various types of bridges  being made in the world that has revolutionized the engineering. He also urged the future engineers to innovate, practice professionalism, and use structural steel efficiently.

Mr. Gaurav Pandey, Head of the Civil Engineering department coordinated the event and made it a great success.
