Uttaranchal Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences organizes a Guest lecture on “Challenges in Standardization of Medicinal Plants and their Formulations”

A Guest Lecture was organised by Pharmacognosy Club on 12th February,2019 on “Challenges in Standardization of Medicinal Plants and their Formulations”. Dr. Yogendra Bahuguna, delivered a speech on standardisation of herbal formulations with respect to current scenario.

Ms. Vanshika Khare, Student Member, introduced the Guest Speaker. Dr Anuj Mittal Director-UIPS felicitated the guest. He also emphasized on the need of qualified and expertise personnel for the standardization of herbal dosage forms. Dr. Bahuguna briefed about the various isolation techniques and methods of standardization of medicinal plants. He also introduced the guidelines of quality control of herbal drugs. Dr Bahuguna elaborated the various aspects and methodologies of drug standardizations like organoleptic, botanical, biological, physical and chemical factors.

The guest informed about the Indian systems of medicine i.e., Siddha , Ayurveda & Unani, mainly encompass herbal medicines along with formulations. He elaborated the challenges involved in the standardisation of herbal drugs, market potential of herbal formulations and advancement in analytical techniques in quality control of herbal formulations. The session was made interactive and the students got information about selection and standardisation of herbal formulations with the help of slides and videos.

Herbal medicines and their preparations have been widely used for thousands of years in developing and developed countries. Herbal medicines are the synthesis of therapeutic experiences on generations of practicing physicians in indigenous systems of medicine, for over hundreds of years. They are also in great demand in the developed world all health care problems because of their efficacy, safety and lesser side effects. Dr.Bahuguna explained that the quantity and quality of the safety and efficacy data on traditional medicine are far from sufficient to meet the criteria needed to support its use world-wide. All the staff members, students attended the lecture and found it very informative and interesting. Dr. Mittal presented the Vote of Thanks to the Guest and the whole team for organizing the skill imparting Guest Lecture.
