Student Development Program On ‘leadership: The Balance Between Competence And Character’ Uttaranchal Institute Of Management

Uttaranchal Institute of Management (UIM), Uttaranchal University, Dehradun organized a one-day Student Development Program on ‘Leadership: The Balance between Competence and Character’ on 27thAug 2020. Head of Department (IT), Dr. Sonal Sharma welcomed the Guest speaker Dr. Shalini Khandelwal, IBS Gurgaon and Mr. Lal Bahadur, Branch Manager, IBS, Dehradun. Dr. Sonal Sharma, introducing the topic, emphasized that leaders are those who not only show the way but also set an example for others to follow. One way be competent enough to be a leader but his character plays a significant role to determine whether he/she has a strong leadership skills or not and vice-a-versa. Mr. Lal Bahadur also welcomed the students and thanked Director UIM, Prof. (Dr.) Pradeep Suri for giving the opportunity to conduct the Student Development Program.

The speaker of the day, Dr. Shalini Khandelwal, Dean-Academics IBS Gurgaon, is an eminent speaker with a vast experience including industry, research and academics. She has conducted various MDPs for senior managers in the corporate and for faculty and students of reputed colleges across the country. She is the recipient of awards for Best Case Writing as well as Best Research Paper from Association of Indian Management Schools, amongst the many accolades received for her academic contribution and professional achievement.

The one-day student development program aimed at establishing a basic understanding of leadership, skills required and expectations from a good leader amongst the seminar participants. The target audience comprised of all the final year management students from BBA, BCOM(Hons.) and MBA programs.

Dr. Shalini Khandelwal emphasized how a leader in tough times, should be able to maintain balance, drive team to achieve the vision and strive towards excellence and still keep the momentum going to achieve success. She discussed how the personality traits like integrity, honesty, authenticity, charisma, intellectual ability, ability to align everyone, to name a few, are important for an effective leader. Dr. Shalini also gave examples of renowned personalities like Jack Welch, Geoffrey who had different leadership styles and then reiterated the fact that leadership style needs to change as per the situation. Various leadership models like trust matrix by Stephen Covey and others were discussed with reference to various examples from industry.

Dr. Sonal Sharma concluded the event with a Vote of Thanks and extended her gratitude towards the Guest Speaker and students. The guest speaker congratulated the students on being highly participative, knowledgeable and an outstanding audience. The seminar was successfully conducted and well participated by the students and faculty members of UIM.
