Law College Dehradun organized its 3rd Edition of ‘The Debater of the Year – 2019’ on 26th February, 2019 under the aegis of Aarambh-The Debating Society. The debate was held bilingually on the topic “THBT All Parliamentary and Legislative Elections should be held simultaneously”. The event was marked by the benign presence of Hon’ble Chancellor Shri. Jitender Joshi, Dr. Abhishek Joshi, Director of Student Affairs and IT Services as the Chief Guest and Mr. Aman Rab, Mr. Pradeep Sati and Mr. Kumar Ashutosh were the esteemed judges of the competition.
The event commenced with the lighting of lamp by the dignitaries and judges. A total of eight speakers presented their debate and moved the crowd with their eloquent and vibrant speeches. The participants displayed their splendid oratorical and argumentative skills in a logical way. Those speaking for the motion argued that holding simultaneous elections of Parliament and Legislative Bodies would ensure governmental efficiency, stability & avoid unnecessary expenditures that accompany separate elections for Parliament and Legislatures. However the same was opposed by some of the participants on the ground of infeasibility, lack of resources, absence of literacy and also for the sake of greater democracy. Eventually the judges declared Mr. Nitesh Kumar as the Best Hindi Debater of the Year while Ms. Somya Saluja was adjudged as the Best English Debater of the Year. The Winners received a Rolling Trophy and a cash prize of about Rs. 4000 was given to every participants of the event by the Hon’ble Chancellor of the University, Shri Jitender Joshi.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Chancellor appreciated the organizers for such a wonderful debate and mentioned that debating is an indispensable part of legal profession as it enables them to overcome inhibitions and stage fear. He praised the argumentative skills of the debaters. Principal & Dean Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna in his address, heaped lavish praise on the participants. He said that becoming Debater of the Year remains a well cherished dream of every student of the college and also commended the quality and standard of the debate of the worthy participants. The event ended with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms.Twinkle Purohit, wherein she extended her heartiest thanks to the Patron of the Society, Dr. Poonam Rawat (HOD)and Mr. Amit Kumar (Chairman of the Society) for their moral support. Present on the occasion were faculty members and students of Law College Dehradun.
