Law College Dehradun organizes a National Webinar on “Cyber Security”

Law College Dehradun, Faculty of Uttaranchal University, organized a National Webinar on ‘Cyber Security’ on 24th June, 2020 with Mr. Akash Kamal Mishra as the Keynote Speaker. Mr. Mishra, the founder of Cybertalkindia, is a young technology safety speaker lawyer, entrepreneur and an author of many books related to cyber safety, computer related crimes with their safety features to mention a few. He completed his Diploma in Certified Information Security Engineering, is a Certified Ethical Hacker from EC-Council and has completed Law from Madhya Pradesh. He is registered as the Distinguished Member- International Council of Jurists, London, United Kingdom and Member- Young International Council for Commercial Arbitration, Hague, Netherlands. Being an author, he has been awarded with many world famous awards including ‘Young Writer 2016’ and also the prestigious ‘Digital India Award- Silver Recognition’ from the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India.

The session began with the Welcome Address delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, Vice Chancellor/Dean, Law College Dehradun, Uttaranchal University. Then, the speaker, Mr. Mishra, uncorked the topic of ‘Cyber Security’ by introducing the audience to cyber issues and the ever looming threat they possess. He mentioned the sudden boom of the social networking sites as a growing concern for cyber security. Referencing to the list of 52 banned Chinese Applications given by the Home Ministry of Government of India, he explained how easily cyber threats leave a person in a vulnerable situation that can be exploited by cyber criminals. Clarifying the roles of anti-virus and firewalls and the threat they bring with them, he pointed out key areas where people are scammed easily. He also shared some statistical analysis of the ever increasing number of cyber crimes given by CERT Annual Report highlighting the younger generation as being more prone to cyber attacks.

The session moved further with Mr. Mishra seamlessly explaining the different activities that create a false illusion leading to a cyber attack, namely, phishing, spam calls or fraud calls, cashback emails, skimmer frauds, Whatsapp security breaches and websites redirection causing IP address to be easily available. Along with these, he also suggested solutions to issues of E-mail security breaches, honey trapping, geotagging and many more. The latter half of the event had the Keynote Speaker taking up doubts and queries of the participants. The audience showcased a wide diversity with not only students but also academicians & eminent personalities from India and abroad actively engaging in discussing the nuances & intricacies of the topic. Queries such as threat by Cloud Storage Services, Cyber Terrorism and dilution of Section 66a by the Supreme Court were dealt by him. Mr. Mishra concluded the session by stressing upon the amendments to be carried out in the IT Law and until then he hinted to the approach of engaging in cyber activities with caution.
