Law College Dehradun organizes a National Webinar on “Career Awareness in Legal Globe”

Law College Dehradun organized a five-day National Webinar on “Career Awareness in Legal Globe” from 8th – 12th June 2020, in collaboration with young motivated and leading minds of the country through Zoom Platform. The Lecture Series focused on the topics about which every law student must know and highlighted the issues related to opportunities, challenges and global practices relevant for the development of the career of a law student. Participation was open for both undergraduate as well as the postgraduate law students from any recognised university across the nation. The event aimed to make the students understand the significance and need of the society and to equip them to be better professionals.

Day – 1 (8th June, 2020)
Speaker: Ms. Debolina Saha, Founder of Internship Bank
Topic: The Art of Choosing Internship
Moderator: Saakshi Suneja

The five-day Webinar started with the warm welcome to the Hon’ble Guest Speaker along with Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, Dean, LCD/Vice-Chancellor, UU (officiating) and Prof. (Dr.) Poonam Rawat, Principal, LCD (officiating), Dr. Razit Sharma, Chairperson – YPS, along with all the attendees of the event. The event commenced with a Welcome Note delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahugun, who then inaugurated the session quoting the significance of career awareness for graduating students.

Ms. Debolina is the Founder of ‘Internship Bank’, an online platform that seeks to connect upcoming young professionals to senior professionals through internship opportunities. She has also worked as an Associate at Dorsey & Whitney, a senior Legal Counsel for the APAC Region at Cantor Fitzerland and an Associate at Allen & Overy, Hong Kong besides working in reputed law firms in India.

Ms. Debolina Saha vividly covered the different aspects of choosing an internship and its importance in the career of a law student. She also covered the different areas in which a student can apply for an internship, the procedure for applying under advocate & law firm and explained the criteria involved in it. She stated that before choosing an internship one should do a self analysis and try to reach out to people by coming out of their comfort zone. She also stressed that the students should treat an internship like a job itself and stay committed to and utilize the opportunity to its maximum. At the end of the session she answered queries of the participants paving way for further clarifications.

Day – 2 (9th June, 2020)
Speaker: Ms. Sukriti Singh, Chief Administrative Officer, Live Law
Topic : Fundamentals of legal writing
Moderator: Sonali Jayara

Ms. Sukriti Singh completed her graduation from University Institute of Law R.D.V.V. Jabalpur and Masters from Rabindranath Tagore University. Currently she is associated with ‘Live Law’ and is a contributing Editor in several National and International Journals.
Ms. Sukriti Singh began the session explaining the fundamentals of legal writing in the law profession. She covered the queries of the student and explained in brief everything related to it and gave her valuable knowledge for strengthening the art of legal writing. Legal writing is a basic tool to achieve success in the profession. The key to hone this skill is reading as much as possible along with the art of analysis in one’s own language. Originality in thoughts comes with an in depth research and this should be presented in a lucid way avoiding jargons and ambiguity. This was followed by an energetic Question Answer Round, where the students cleared their doubts regarding legal writing.

Day -3 (10th June, 2020)
Speaker: Mr.V.Inbavijayan, International Arbitrator & Managing Partner – KFCRI
Topic: Scope and Practice in Arbitration
Moderator: Nitin Garg

Mr. Inbavijayan is an International Arbitrator and Managing Partner at KFCRI. He pursued law from Dr. Ambedkar University and is currently Managing Partner in Kolve Globe. He has presided as a sole arbitrator in more than 300 domestic cases at the National and International level. His key areas include International Commercial Arbitration, Maritime Arbitration and IPR.

The Expert Speaker covered the areas of arbitration and mediation and its scope in future. As traditional litigation is time taking, due to the complexities involved and commercial matters, the need for arbitration has increased. He also discussed on International Arbitration and its functioning. A law student can undertake roles like Arbitration Counsel, Experts, Arbitrators and the like. Before handling a case one should have a proper strategy as how to handle a particular case, a deep understanding of a contract comprising arbitration clause knowledge, ability to express and a holistic approach. He enlightened the students with his experience in this field and encouraged them to be part of the emerging arenas of law. In the end, during the Question Answer Session, he guided the students regarding internship in the arbitration institute.

Day – 4 (11th June, 2020)
Speaker: Mr Abhinav Sharma, Advocate, Supreme Court
Topic: How to make a Career in Litigation
Moderator: Ashutosh Raturi

Mr. Abhinav Sharma is practising in various courts and tribunals in Delhi and Punjab. He completed his law from Delhi University and deals in cases related to criminal, economic offences, negotiable instruments, service law, matrimonial, SARFAESI, and Insolvency to mention a few.

A profession in law is a social obligation full of challenges, yet satisfying. A law student should be clear with the concepts and bare acts and should have read the judgments and analysed them. He also stressed on the importance of gaining practical knowledge through internships, participating in Moot Courts, drafting and keeping abreast with the latest technologies and its relevancy to the profession. One should develop a passion for the same and know the art of handling clients. The lucid and practical approach of the speaker grabbed the interests of the audience.

Day – 5 (12th June, 2020)
Speaker : Ms Tanvi Dubey (Associate, Amarchand Mangaldas)
Topic: How to Customize 5 year Law Course
Moderator: Niharika Jha

Ms. Tanvi Dubey completed her law from Barkatullah University and worked with Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. She has interned with stalwarts of law like Ram Jethmalani, Justice Deepak Mishra and Mohan Parasaran and several other organizations of repute. Her expertise is in the area of Alimony, Arbitration, Civil and Criminal Law.

Ms. Tanvi Dubey explicitly covered the topic to customize the five years in a Law College. She shared her journey about the internship & certification courses and its relevance. Discussing the various opportunities one has in a Law School, she highlighted the importance of taking part in activities like moot courts and academics. At the end of the session, she answered the questions of the young participants warding off the perplexity in their minds.

The five-day National Webinar Session on “Career Awareness in the Legal Globe”, culminated with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by the Chairperson of the Society, Dr. Razit Sharma, wherein he conveyed his gratefulness towards the management and expressed his deepest gratitude to the speakers for sharing their valuable knowledge. He also appreciated the President Sahil Thakur and Vice President Somi Sharma, Student Coordinators Mahima Bhatia and Abhijeet Kashyap along with other members of Youth Parliament Society for the tremendous effort put forth and the participants for their zeal for knowledge. Around 350 participants registered for the event from reputed Universities across the nation like, Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, RGVM PG Law College (Rajasthan), IP College For Women, University of Delhi, Indraprastha College for Women, Delhi University, UPES (Dehradun), HPNLU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Shri Vaishnav Institute of Law, to mention a few. The session proved to be very informative and the practical knowledge imparted by the speaker will help the participant choose the right path in their career.
