Law College Dehradun organizes a National Symposium on “Intellectual Property Rights”

Law College Dehradun organized a National Symposium on “Intellectual Property Rights” from 27th -31st July 2020 virtually through Zoom platform. The five-day Symposium was the outcome of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Uttaranchal University and SS Rana & Co., which is one of the leading Corporate Legal Firms active in the dissemination of legal services since 1989.  This National Level Forum was declared open by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Uttaranchal University Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna who extended a cordial invite to the Keynote Speakers of the national event.

Day – 1 (27 July, 2020)

Mr. Vikrant Rana was the Keynote Speaker of Day 1. Mr. Vikrant is the Managing Partner of S.S. Rana & Co., a premier Intellectual Property and Corporate Law Firm in India. Enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1996, Mr. Vikrant is also an Advocate on Record with the Supreme Court of India (2006) and a Registered Patent Agent (1998). He is also listed as an IP Facilitator with the Government of India’s Start-ups Intellectual Property Protection (SIPP) Scheme launched in 2016. Vikrant has been a Member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) for the past 20 years, is actively involved in sensitizing awareness on Intellectual Property Rights in India and is associated with several government organizations including the TIFAC, Department of Science and Technology, Patent Facilitating Centres (PFC), Patent Information Centres (PIC), FICCI, Ministry of Small-Scale Industries (MSSI), CII, WIPO, TERI, IIM Ahmadabad, Banaras Hindu University, etc. and is a frequent speaker and panelist in seminars and conferences conducted by these organizations. The First Session headed by Mr. Vikrant was an introduction to Intellectual Property Rights. It covered almost every aspect related to the Intellectual Property and was very enlightening and informative.

Day – 2 (28 July, 2020)

Ms. Ananyaa Banerjee, Keynote Speaker of the Second Day, is a Senior Associate Advocate of S.S. Rana & Co. and assists on various non contentious and contentious IP matters including trademark oppositions and cancellations. With her experience in the field of IP enforcement actions, she handles complex trademark enforcement cases for a number of Fortune 500 companies in India, the SAARC Countries and the European Union amongst other jurisdictions. She is a member of the International Bar Association (IBA), International Trademark Association (INTA) and Pharmaceutical Trade Marks Group (PTMG). During the session she discussed the importance of Trademarks for effective business policy of every corporate entity in present scenario. Ms. Ananyaa gave a lucid explanation on trademark as an asset and its value beyond the core business. She asserted that Trade Mark makes it easy for the customers to trace the brand and serves as an effective communication tool to capture the interest and attention of the customers. 

Day – 3 (29 July, 2020)

Mrs. Sukku was the Keynote Speaker of the Third Day. Mrs. Sukku is a registered Indian Patent Agent having an experience of over 7 years in the field of Intellectual Property Rights. With proficiency in all aspects of Patents and Designs, she works on searching, drafting, National and International filing, office action response and opinions related to patents in various domains especially computer science and IT, written statements and replies for pre-grant; post-grant and other related matters. She is also a member of the Asian Patents Attorney’s Association (APAA) and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), and has attended multiple conferences both in India and abroad. Ms. Sukku Singh, in her session, enlightened the participants with the practical aspect of registration of Patents as well as Designs. She thoroughly discussed on the important role played by these two intellectual concepts in the mercantile environment of the country.

Day – 4 (30 July, 2020)

The Day 4 Session had Mr. Bijit Das as Keynote Speaker. Mr. Bijit Das is a Senior Associate Advocate at S.S. Rana & Co. and focuses on Intellectual Property and Innovation & Information Policy, specifically on issues such as digital freedoms and open access. His approach to work is driven by thought leadership, strong focus on academics, research, creativity & technology and a better understanding of the legal, regulatory and political environment and industries in which the Firm’s clients operate. He has represented the firm in International Conferences including the International Trademark Association’s Annual Meeting in Barcelona (2017), Seattle (2018) & Boston (2019), the Leadership Meeting in New Orleans (2018) & Austin (2019) and the Asian Patent Attorneys’ Association’s 68th Council Meet in New Delhi (2018). He regularly speaks at various IP Seminars and Conferences organized by leading Indian Industry Associations like the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Indian Lawyers Association (ILA) and the DPIIT’s Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM). The Session was devoted to Copyright Protection and Mr. Das successfully covered every concept putting special emphasis on the problem of Plagiarism in academia and also discussed how the same is connected to Copyright infringement.

Day – 5 (31 July, 2020)

Ms. Priya Adlakha was the Keynote Speaker of Day 5. She is the Managing Associate Advocate of S.S. Rana & Co. With a working experience for over 9 years, she spearheads S.S. Rana’s Litigation Team. Having an extensive experience in the field of IP Litigation & Enforcement Actions through civil and criminal anti-counterfeiting raids and legal consultancy, she handles complex Trademarks Litigation Cases for a number of fortune 500 companies in India and SAARC Countries. She has a wide experience of handling and arguing matters in the High Court and other courts/tribunals of the Country. Ms. Priya is a Member of International Bar Association (IBA) and International Trademark Association (INTA) and has attended International Conferences to broaden the legal horizons and understand the latest legal developments across the globe. She discussed in detail the enforcement aspects of the Intellectual Property Rights. 

The five-day National Symposium on Intellectual Property Rights saw more than 250 participants who actively participated from every corner of the nation as well as from overseas. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the University Prof.(Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna , expressed his gratitude to the Keynote Speakers and  also appreciated  the participants for their display of enthusiasm and curiosity  by marking their presence and making this Symposium a huge success. The National Symposium on Intellectual Property Rights was smoothly and eminently convened by Dr. Sukhwinder Singh.
