Law College Dehradun, Faculty of Uttaranchal University, celebrates ‘World Poetry Day’

Law College Dehradun, Faculty of Uttaranchal University, organized a ‘Poetry Recitation Competition’ on the occasion of “World Poetry Day” on 21st March, 2018. UNESCO declared March 21st as “World Poetry Day” to promote peace and multilingualism around the world and protect all mother languages. In celebrating the day, UNESCO recognizes the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind. One of the main objectives of the Day is to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and to offer endangered languages the opportunity to be heard within their communities.

Students from the constituent colleges of Uttaranchal University participated in the competition. The event was organized in a splendid manner in the Seminar Hall of Law College Dehradun where students from various parts of the nation studying in different streams offered by the University participated. Student community has well understood the fact that Language is the most powerful instrument to preserve and display feelings and emotions. Exploiting the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind the participants displayed their poetic skill in different languages like Punjabi, Malayalam, Manipuri, Garhwali, Kumauni, Punjabi, Bengali, Hindi and English. The creations of the young student poets were written and recited through the medium of their mother tongue on burning and evergreen themes like nature, love, language, patriotism, woman freedom, to name a few. Hon’ble Chancellor Shri Jitender Joshi and Principal & Dean of Law College Dehradun Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna along with faculty members and hundreds of students witnessed the poetic breeze of the day. Eventually, Megha Shazi won the prize for the best poem in Malayalam, Sohini Burman for Bengali, Piyush Chamoli & Sameksha Pokhriyal for Garhwali, Shabeena Khan & Tanveer Ahmed for Urdu, Neera Sinam & Longjam for Manipuri, Megha Rathore for Kumauni, Shiv Jindal for Punjabi, Prachi & Nivedita Bhatia for Hindi and Sanjeetha Sarswat for English.

Hon’ble Chancellor Shri Jitender Joshi felicitated Dr. Anil Dixit, the Convener of the Event and appreciated the students for their talents and promised that their efforts and talents would be recognized and published in the University Magazine. Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna conveyed his heartiest congratulations to all the participants and also stated that the event served as a platform for students to portray their inborn talents. He also added that the Poetry Competition showcased the metropolitan atmosphere in the University where students from North, South, East and West of the Nation come together with the common aim of learning and growing. The ambience, thus created, inspires and promotes solidarity based on understanding and tolerance.
