A one-week faculty development programme on “Research techniques for life sciences”

School of Applied and Life Sciences, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun organized a one-week faculty development programme (FDP) on “Research techniques for life sciences” on 16th -23rd May 2022.  The aim of this FDP was to share the knowledge of eminent academicians and researchers in the field of Life science such as Biotechnology, Microbiology, Chemistry and Food Biotechnology. The FDP included various domains in the field of green chemistry, biofuel, advances in plant and agricultural sciences, agro-food technology, bioremediation, environmental conservation, health and medicine, microbes in the environment, and bioethics, and IPR etc. The objective of FDP is to update the participants with the latest research and development by providing exposure to practical problems and their solutions through case studies. The programme was attended by around 30 participants. Attendees included Research Scholars and faculties from various basic and applied sciences backgrounds. It was considered to include various fields of study while designing the faculty development programme.

The programme started with the lighting of lamp by Prof (Dr) Dharam Buddhi, Vice-Chancellor, Prof (Dr) Ajay Singh, Dean, SALS, Research & Studies and Convener, the Co-Conveners, Dr Nishesh Sharma, HoD, Biotechnology, Dr Poonam Negi HOD, Chemistry and Dr Sukriti Singh, HoD, Food Technology, Joint Organizing Secretaries. Dr Ashish Tiwari, Dr Mamta Bisht and Mr Junaid Aman were also present during the Inaugural Ceremony. Dr Sukriti Singh welcomed our eminent speakers Prof (Dr) N Gopalan, Professor, Central University of Tamil Nadu and Prof (Dr) D S Rawat, University of Delhi. Prof (Dr) N Gopalan discussed the importance of research techniques in the field of life sciences. Prof (Dr) Dharam Buddhi, Vice-Chancellor focussed on excellence in academics with research. He emphasised the need for research in academics. Dr Sukriti Singh, Uttaranchal University proposed a vote of thanks for the Inaugural Ceremony.

Prof (Dr) Ajay Singh, Dean, SALS, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun explained research ethics as a personal code of conduct in research activity and discussed research ethics while performing, publishing and other research-related activities and the FDP continues for one week. Next day Dr Anita Gehlot, HoD, Department of Research and Innovation, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun gave her talk, about “Industry 4.0” and IoT applications. Dr Rajesh Singh, Director, Research and Innovation, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun delivered his talk on the importance and application of embedded systems. Prof (Dr) M P Singh, Dean, School of Agriculture, Uttaranchal University, explained the new challenges like climate change and crop diseases for sustainable development in his speech. Prof N Gopalan, Professor, Central University of Tamil Nadu delivered his talk on the topic Application of biotechnology in food and agriculture, further, he explained that biotechnology has a major impact on food, nanomaterials, and omics technology, disease and its management etc. Prof Veena Joshi, Professor and Dean HNBGU, Head Department of Chemistry, SRT Campus, HN B Garhwal University. She delivered her lecture on Chemistry scope and job opportunities. Prof G K  Dhingra, Professor, HoD and Dean Pt LMS Sri Dev Suman University, Rishikesh, explained about quality research paper writings. Prof (Dr) Rajendra Prasad, Associate Professor, School of Agriculture, Uttaranchal University delivered his talk on the Research scope in microbiology and its impact on basic and advanced scientific research. Prof (Dr) Vineet Kumar, Scientist G, Forest Research Institute, Dehradun delivered his talk on the extraction of natural fibre from pine needles and the reduction of forest fires. Furthermore, he explained how to obtain the value-added product from pine needles and how they are a very good source of biomass. Prof (Dr) Manoj Tripathi, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIAE, Bhopal discussed how to write a proposal for a research project and underlined the importance of writing and applying for a project proposal and how to take research grants.

At the Valedictory function, a welcome address was given by Dr Sukriti Singh, Uttaranchal University followed by a speech by Prof (Dr) Manoj Tripathi. The assignment session was there with the aim to provide a platform for effective Science and Technology communication, create awareness, offer training, and much-needed skills and aware various participants on current and relevant topics. The session ended with the feedback of the faculty where participants shared their experiences about one-week FDP.
