Uttaranchal University celebrated the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by conducting‘Cleanliness Drive’ in the University Campus.
The drive initiated with the Inaugural Address of Prof. (Dr.) N.K. Joshi, Vice Chancellor – Uttaranchal University, wherein, he stated Mahatma Gandhi’s views on cleanliness. Mahatma Gandhi said “Sanitation is more important than independence”. His dream was total sanitation for all. Dr. Joshi informed that Prime Minister of India Shri. Narendra Modi had launched a nationwide cleanliness campaign ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan” on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s Birth Anniversary in 2014 as he stated that “Mahatma Gandhi never compromised on cleanliness. He gave us freedom. We should give him a clean India.” The concept of Swachh Bharat is to provide sanitation facilities to every family. Dr. Joshi further informed that Uttaranchal University has contributed to the objective of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan since the very inception of the mission. It has conducted several events wherein the University channelized the energy of the young students towards the movement aiming awareness through example.
Chancellor of Uttaranchal University Shri. Jitender Joshi stated that we gained freedom under the leadership of Gandhiji but his dream of a clean India remains unfulfilled. He stressed on the fact that it is essential for everyone to learn about cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation. Cleanliness should be imbibed and inculcated as a habit. He acknowledged the role of education & higher educational institutions towards the same and reiterated that as earlier Uttaranchal University will uphold the ideal of cleanliness and be an example for others to follow. He concluded his address by flagging off the event.
The campaign started with the active contribution of students from all the constituent schools of Uttaranchal University. The students cleaned the whole campus diligently and showed that they comprised the aware and proactive youth force which aims to contribute their share in making India a developed nation. The effort of the students was very much appreciated by the University.
The entire campaign was successful and the University aims to persevere with its efforts of bringing positive changes in the outlook of the society thereby serving the nation and the society as part of its Social Responsibility Initiative.
