Uttaranchal Institute of Technology organizes a Guest Lecture on “Some Aspects of Computational Mechanics Based on FEM for Engineering Problems”

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Uttaranchal Institute of Technology conducted a ‘Guest Lecture’ on “Some Aspects of Computational Mechanics Based on FEM for Engineering Problems”on April 17, 2019. Dr. Sachin Kumar, Assistant Professor from IIT-Ropar, was the Guest Speaker. The programme was attended by Mr.Sanjeev Joshi (HOD-ME), Dr.SumitChaudhary (HOD-CSE and Coordinator-UIT), Dr. Tariq (HOD-CE), Dr.Sushant Singh (Assistant Prof., ME), Faculty Members and the students of B.Tech.(Mechanical Engineering) & B.Tech. (Civil Engineering).

The program started with the lighting of the lamp by Hon’ble Chancellor Shri. Jitender Joshi, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) N.K Joshi and Dr. Sachin Kumar. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor felicitated Dr. Sachin Kumar and briefed the students regarding the importance & role of FEM in Computational Mechanics and its application.

Dr. Sachin Kumar described the Computational Mechanics based on Finite Element Method and its application in solving solid mechanics problems and also the use of Finite Element Method in conducting stress analysis of human bones w.r.t “Diabetic and Non Diabetic bones”. He explained that a system with a finite number of unknowns is called a discrete system. A system with an infinite number of unknowns is called a continuous system. He also said that the biggest advantage in using the Finite Element Analysis is that we can either vary the discretization per element or discretize the corresponding basis functions.

Dr. Sachin Kumar explained the concept by taking a small problem of solid mechanics using FEM wherein the structural system is modeled by a set of appropriate finite elements interconnected at discrete points called nodes. The Expert invited questions from the audience and satisfactorily replied to each query.

The Guest Lecture was highly informative and concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr. S. K. Joshi, HOD-ME.
