Uttaranchal Institute of Management organizes a Panel Discussion on ‘Sustainable Development Goals’

Uttaranchal Institute of Management, Uttaranchal University, organized a Panel Discussion on ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ on 1st February, 2020 for the students pursuing MBA, B.Com. (Honours), BCA and B.Sc. (IT) programmes.

The Resource Persons were:

  1. Mr. Nitesh Kaushik, Entrepreneurship and Placement Expert – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
  2. Mr. Ajay Purohit, MIS Expert (UNDP)
  3. Mr. Ranjan Kumar Borah, Disaster Management Expert (UNDP)

The event commenced with the felicitation of Hon’ble Chancellor Shri Jitender Joshi, Mr. Nitesh Kaushik, Mr. Ajay Purohit and Mr. Ranjan Kumar Borah (UNDP). The event was graced by the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Pradeep Suri (Director-UIM), Dr. Anshul Sharma (HOD-Management) and Dr. Sonal Sharma (HOD-IT). Master of Ceremony, Mr. Shivendra Singh Chaudhary, welcomed all the dignitaries and briefed about their profile.

Prof. (Dr.) Pradeep Suri delivered the Inaugural Address and highlighted the role of UNDP with membership of 170 countries around the globe and informed that it is ardently working towards accomplishment of 17 sustainable development goals. He also threw light on the historic development of UNDP since 1992 and the final draft which was approved on 15th September, 2015. The goals were set on the basis the 5Ps model comprising of People, Planet, Peace, Prosperity and Partnership. Some of the SDG’s are No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health, Gender Equality and Education for All. He also emphasized on educational opportunities for specially-abled children. He stated that India has taken the lead in publishing and distributing Braille Books to the visually-challenged students.

Mr. Nitesh Kaushik spoke on sustainable development stating that it must continue for future generations also. He also shared information on goals for 2030 which included 3 aspects: Opportunity, Equality and Equity which means that the opportunities must be provided to all and there should be fairness in offering opportunities to each stakeholder. He also reiterated on the necessity of business organizations to align their goals with those of the government for sustainable development. He also cogitated on the entrepreneurial model envisaging important inter-related elements, viz.: Humans (skill), Finance (schemes), Physical (infrastructure), Natural (resources, environment and disaster resilience) and Market (channels, expertise and logistics).

Mr. Ajay Purohit talked about the role of Management Information System (MIS) which focused on enabling data for action and decision-making and also for information dissemination and review.

Mr. Ranjan Kumar Borah detailed the process of disaster-risk management with special emphasis on managing natural calamities and mitigating the sufferings of the victims. He projected certain visuals exemplifying the effective management techniques adopted for preventing as well as facing the hazards of disaster.

The event successfully concluded with a Vote of Thanks which was proposed by Dr. Sonal Sharma.
