School of Liberal Arts observes “World No Tobacco Day”

31 May is observed as ‘World No Tobacco Day’. This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.

Each year, the World Health Organization (WHO) marks the ‘World No Tobacco Day’ to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.

As per the directives of University Grants Commission School of Liberal Arts observed the day and organized a Pledge Taking Ceremony on 31st May, 2021.The activity aimed to condemn the use of tobacco in any form. The entire SLA fraternity gathered for and participated in the Pledge Taking Ceremony.

The event was hosted by Prof. (Dr.) Shriya Goyal, Dean-SLA. Not only at the individual level, but the ceremony also intended to ensure to motivate the tobacco addicts around them to quit it. The students were made aware of the injurious effects of tobacco on the individual health and the hazards it carries for others around us. The techniques to reduce and gradually quit smoking and tobacco addiction were also elaborated upon. The oath was spoken by Prof. (Dr.) Shriya Goyal and all the Faculty Members along with the students of SLA repeated the same, vowing the condemnation of tobacco products in any form. The objective of the event along with the motto of ‘World No Tobacco Day 2021’, i.e., “Commit to Quit”, was thus justified.

The event was successful to motivate everyone to create healthier environment that is conducive to quitting tobacco by advocating for strong tobacco cessation policies; increasing access to cessation services; raising awareness of tobacco industry tactics, and empowering tobacco users to make successful quit attempts through ‘quit & win’ and justify why ‘Quitters are Winners’.
