School of Applied and Life Sciences celebrates National Science Day 2021

School of Applied and Life Sciences celebrated National Science Day with great enthusiasm from 25th February to 29th February, 2021.

The day is celebrated across India to acknowledge the notable inventionRaman Effect” by India’s greatest scientist and Nobel Laureate Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. The theme for National Science Day 2021 was “Future of STI: Impacts on Education, Skills, and Work”. National Science Day 2021 aims to motivate the students to gain hands-on experience in the field of science. The celebration of National Science Day includes organizing science exhibitions, events based on science themes and scientific activities. 

Celebration of National Science Day began with a visit of the students of SALS to UCOST on 25th February, 2021, for the launch of DBT-Skill Vigyan Program as part of celebration of National Science Day 2021. The program was organized by ‘Biogenerika Club’ of Department of Biotechnology and ‘Food Tech Club’ of Department of Food Technology. The visit proved to be extremely beneficial for the students as they got an opportunity to listen to talk of eminent scientist including talk of Prof. R.N.K. Bamezai (Former Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, Jammu) and Invited Experts from industry. Students got an exposure to prevailing career opportunities in field of life science and also the skills required for a career in industry and research. Students were accompanied by Dr. Nishesh Sharma and Dr. Rohit Sharma.

“The essence of science is independent thinking, hard work and not equipment”

 Keeping in mind the words of Sir C.V. Raman, the student club of Department of Chemistry, namely, “Resonance Club” organized a Poster Presentation Competition on 26th February, 2021. The event was co-ordinated by Mr. Shivam Pandey (Co-ordinator – Resonance Club) and Prof. (Dr.) Poonam Negi (HOD – Chemistry). The theme of the event was “Chemistry In Everyday life”. Students from different departments participated enthusiastically in the event and made wonderful and innovative posters. Ankit Joshi of B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry was the Student Coordinator of the event.

The event was judged by Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh, Dean – SALS, Prof. (Dr.) Bharti Ramola and Prof. (Dr.) Poonam Negi. The winners of the event were as follows-:

1st Prize- Kaushiki Ahuja and Adeeba [B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry]

2nd Prize- Dipasha Saxena and Agrima Pandey [B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry]

3rd Prize- Vibha Joshi and Vishwajeet [M.Sc. Chemistry]

‘To infinity and beyond’, the student club of Department of Mathematics also organized a Scientific Quiz Competition on 26th February 2021. A large number of students participated in the event. The participants were supposed to answer fifty questions in thirty minutes. The Winners of the Quiz were as follows:

1st Prize: Sumit Bhatt [B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry, 3rd Year]

2nd  Prize: Sahil Ali [B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics, 2nd Year]

3rd Prize: Deepasha Saxena [B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry, 3rd Year]

On the third day of the celebration, Eureka Club of Department of Physics organized a Power Point Presentation on the topic “Role of Science & Technology for the welfare of Humanity” on 27th February, 2021. Students of various Departments of SALS participated in the event. The event started with Welcome Note delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh, Dean – SALS who spoke about science and its role in the betterment of mankind. 

Students participated with enthusiasm and their presentation covered a variety of topics like- ‘What is Science?’, ‘How the technology works?’, ‘Artificial Skin Growth Mechanism’ and ‘Women Sanitization’.  

The winners of the Power Point Presentation were as follows:

Winner : Atul  [B.Sc.(Hons.)  Biotechnology, 3rd Year]

I st Runner-up : Sameer Singh & Sachin Lodhi  [B.Sc.(Hons.) Physics, 2nd Year] 

Consolation Prize : Ravinder Oraon [B.Sc.(Hons.)  Biotechnology, 3rd Year]

Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr. B.S Rawat, Head – Department of Physics, towards the conclusion of the Presentation Session.

The Valedictory Session of National Science Day Celebrations was held on 29th February 2021. The Chief  Guest of the occassion was Hon’ble Vice- Chancellor, Uttaranchal University, Prof. (Dr.) Devender Pathak. The session began with lighting of the auspicious lamp by Vice- Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Devender Pathak, Dean – Sciences Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh, Prof. (Dr.) V.K.Srivastav, Prof. (Dr.) B.S Rawat, Prof. (Dr.) Bharti Ramola, Prof. (Dr.) Poonam Negi,,Dr. Nishesh Sharma and Dr. Shilpa Sharma.

Dean – Sciences, Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh in his Welcome Note briefed everyone regarding the various activities held in School of Applied and Life Sciences on the occasion of National Science Day. He congratulated all the winners and encouraged the students to participate in more such activities.

Dr. Devender Pathak, Vice- Chancellor, Uttaranchal University, congratulated School of Applied and Life Sciences for organizing various programmes on the occasion of National Science Day. He praised the students who participated and asked them to keep up the inquisitive spirit of science alive in them and conquer every barrier that comes in their path. 

This was followed by prize distribution of activities conducted from 25th to 27th February, 2021 organized by various departmental clubs of School of Applied and Life Sciences.

The Session ended by a Vote of Thanks delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Bharti Ramola.
