NSS Wing of Uttaranchal University conducts ‘Cleanliness & Hygiene Awareness Campaign’

As per the circular received from HRD ministry, calling for participation from all colleges and Universities in Swachhta Pakhwada (1st – 15th September 2017), for spreading the message of cleanliness not only among the students but also the habitats in the surrounding areas, on 9th September 2017 NSS Wing of Uttaranchal University, initiated the work “Care for the surroundings” and visited the nearby areas. In this campaign, the students from various constituent colleges from the University talked to the various shopkeepers in Prem Nagar and solicited their opinion regarding the progress of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. In this campaign, the students witnessed that some areas of market were full of garbage and no dustbins were there for waste disposal. During their survey, the students came across varied commercial locations around our University that included grocery shops, medical stores, communication marts, restaurants and general stores etc. These generate different kinds of waste materials regularly. For that purpose, the students (who have been trained well by our NSS Coordinator, Dr. V. K. Srivastava and his team), tried to educate them regarding different types of waste so created. They were told that the waste materials are classified as ‘green waste’, ‘brown waste’, ‘recyclable waste’, ‘non-recyclable waste’, ‘infectious waste’ and ‘non-infectious waste’ etc. and that how should each type of waste should be disposed as per the guidelines described under “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. For example, the medical wastes must not be put in the general dustbin and it should be disposed off according to bio-medical waste handling rules, and so on. Many shopkeepers expressed their displeasure about the indifferent approach of the government agencies in the matter.

On this occasion, Shri. Jitender Joshi, Hon’ble Chancellor of the University, highlighted the significance of cleanliness in human life. Dr. Pradeep Suri, Director UIM, emphasized the need for cleanliness and its health benefits. He further reminded that cleanliness is next to godliness.

Dr.V.K. Srivastava, University Coordinator of NSS, Mr. Atma Nand and Mr.Rakesh Semwal, and the following students were also present in the campaign: Aryan Singh, Nikhil, Robin Singh, Kushagra Sharma, Mansi Mittal, Priya, Kuber Kaul etc.
