Law College Dehradun organizes the 3rd Edition of National Debate Competition 'Concours De Debat 2019' - Air Marshal Brijesh Dhar Jayal (PVSM AVSM VM and Bar) presides as Chief Guest

Law College Dehradun organized its 3rd Edition of National Debate Competition ‘Concours De Debat 2019’ on 29th March, 2019, splendidly under the aegis of ‘Aarambh’ the Debating Society of Law College. The Chief Guest of the occasion was Air Marshall (Retd.) B. D. Jayal while Dr. Suchismita Sengupta Pandey, Dr. V. P. Joshi and Dr. G. S. Chauhan were present as the distinguished judges of the Competition. The debate, on a contemporary topic, was held bilingual in both English and Hindi with a massive Cash Prize and Rolling Trophies. The Inaugural Ceremony took place in the Seminar Hall of the College where Hon’ble Chancellor Shri. Jitender Joshi felicitated the Chief Guest by presenting memento. This was followed by lighting of auspicious lamp by the dignitaries and the recital of University Kulgeet.

The event was kick started by an inspiring speech delivered by the Chief Guest of the day Mr. Jayal, who has been one of the best Test Pilots of the Indian Air Force. He has the experience of conducting air sorties for 424 hours. He has successfully flown MIG-21, Canbera and Jaguar and achieved the glory of taking the First Test Flight of indigenously developed and upgraded MIG-2. Air Marshall (Retd.) B. D. Jayal, in his address, explained the background of defense indigenization in India. He stated the modus operandi of HAL and Ordinance Factories. Elucidating the importance, risk and courage of Test Pilots he observed that technological sophistication has ensured greater safety and security of Test Pilots. He also added that indigenization of defense program is indispensable for matching the superiority of major powers of the world. He opined that despite being the third largest military power, we import defense equipments worth 11 lakh 24 thousand crores rupees. Mr. Jayal offered his fearless views regarding the indigenization of defense and satiated the curiosity of students about the same.

The National Debate Competition saw participation from reputed Universities and Colleges from all over the nation. There were around 25 teams from Jamia Milia Islamia (New Delhi), Doon University (Dehradun), D.A.V. College of Girls (Yamunanagar), ICFAI University (Dehradun), Devi Ahilya University (Indore, M.P.), Shri Guru Ram Rai University (Dehradun), UPES (Dehradun), M.P.U. (Rohtak), M.M.H. College (Ghaziabad), Tirthangar University (U.P.), Aligarh Muslim University (U.P.), Army Institute of Law (Mohali Punjab), Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, to mention a few.

Arguing in favor of defense indigenization, participants held politicization of the issue responsible for its failure. They mentioned that Indian Economy at present is not ready for the same as the manufacturing of Tejas took 32 years. Rafale Deal and MIG 21 issues also found references during the debate. However, opponents of the topic countered the same, referring the first indigenously developed fighter plane Tejas which was completed ahead of China. They stated that declaring the whole Program a failure because of a few defects would not be appropriate. The war of words was furious yet laden with facts in the plethora of arguments and counter arguments which made the task evenmore difficult for the judging panel.

Those present on the occasion included Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) N. K. Joshi, Principal & Dean Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, Dr. Poonam Rawat (HOD- Law), Chairman Mr. Amit Kumar, Faculty Members and Students of Law College Dehradun along with the participants. Principal in his speech appreciated the society members for their commitment and perseverance and encouraged them to organize more such events. The event came to a glorious end with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by a member of ‘Aarambh – The Debating Society of Law College Dehradun.
