Law College Dehradun organizes a Faculty Development Program entitled “Development of teaching skills with Advanced Research Techniques”

Faculty Development Programs are intended to strengthen the professional development of the faculty members and to acquaint them with the recent teaching pedagogy and research methods. This inhouse program enables the teacher to remain at the frontiers of knowledge in his/her areas of subject expertise and gain working knowledge of other domains as well. 

Objective: 

This Faculty Development Program intends enriching its participants and:

  • To provide teachers with training opportunities to achieve maximum effectiveness.
  • To apprise faculties to more innovative teaching techniques, like case studies, simulation exercises and other CCE materials based on the experience & inputs of the participants for systematic management of teaching and learning.
  • To demonstrate continuous progress in developing current content knowledge and the skill based on instructional strategies required to facilitate effective learning for all students.
  • To develop research acumen among faculty members and also dissemination of the same amongst the students by incorporating research-based inputs in education.
  • To acquaint the participants with the use of basic qualitative and quantitative research techniques and data analysis tools.
  • To re-emphasize the concept of “teacher as transformer” who go beyond the syllabus and beyond the classroom to motivate the students for accepting challenges for innovative work.
  • To focus on building work life balance and emotional intelligence.

INAUGURAL SESSION:

Law College Dehradun organized fourteen days Faculty Development Program on the theme “Development of teaching skills with Advanced Research Techniques” from 20 July-02 August 2019. Prof. S.D Sharma, winner of President Award and currently Dean of Law Department, Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Central University, was present as the chief guest on the occasion while Chancellor of Uttaranchal University, Shri Jitendra Joshi as well as Vice Chancellor, Prof. N.K. Joshi were the other distinguished guests.  The program was inaugurated with the lighting of auspicious lamp by the dignitaries and Hon’ble Chancellor Shri Jitender Joshi presented a bouquet & memento to the Chief Guest. 

At the outset Principal&Dean Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna addressed the gathering and welcomed the keynote speaker of the day. He also stated that the development of any country depends upon the skill and expertise of its teachers. He also averred that reputed scholars from law and other fields have been invited to deliver lectures at this faculty development programme. Invited guests will teach the faculties about the techniques of research as well as application of legal database particularly ‘Manupatra, and ‘Lexis Nexis’. He observed that the faculties of the college will be in a position to ensure all round development of the students after being trained in latest teaching techniques and methods.

Speaking on the occasion Hon’ble Chancellor, Shri Jitender Joshi stated that Uttaranchal University has been inviting experts and scholars for the enhancement of teaching methodologies as well as developing the expertise of teachers for the betterment of the students.

Technical Session

20-21 July, 2019

Prof. S D Sharma most respected and celebrated academician, in the field of law has held several honorable positions and is currently associated with Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow. Prof Sharma has more than thirty years of teaching and research experience and is a recipient of President Award in Research for the year 2017. He has expertise in Jurisprudence and Intellectual Property Rights, Constitutional Law, Administrative Law and has organized several Refresher Courses and Teachers’ Training Program. Besides this, Prof Sharma has also worked as Member of Expert Committee in Law and Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India from 2005. In addition to this he has authored and edited numerous books in the field of law.

 Prof. S.D. Sharma, thanked for the opportunity provided and appreciated Law College Dehradun for its diligence, composite culture, and unremitting process of producing Judicial officers for the society. His discourse was focussed on “Pedagogy of Legal Teaching and Learning Centric.” He began with the statement that Nature is the best teacher and that teaching and learning is a natural habit of expressing thoughts. His conceptual features included Traditional, Scientific, and Technical methods. He insisted that the teaching fraternity should be ready to accept the challenges by incorporating the contemporary ideas. We should follow the rationales of the learner-centred pedagogical approach and implement it appropriately. Speaking on ‘Justice’ he mentioned that it comes from lauded personalities, which is practiced for the betterment of the society and should be given to the needy and downtrodden. Application of judicious mind along with critical analysis is quintessential for the teachers to have a better learning outcome. It is the duty of a teacher to instigate the analytical skill amidst the students. He also emphasised that the pedagogy of teaching should have a substantial shift from teacher centric to learner centric. Skill assessment of the learner should be based on Communication skills, Intellectual development, Corporate responsibility, and Social services. 

The painstaking deliverance of ideas by the expert proved to be rejuvenating for the faculty members.  

22 July,2019 Contemporary Issues on Environmental Laws In Learning And Teaching (Expert: Mr. Avdesh Kaushal,)

Mr. Avdesh Kaushal, Padmashree Awardee, Chairman Rural Litigation & Entitlement Kendra (RLEK) is a renowned academician, environmentalist, and an activist, who has beenappointed by the Government of India on numerous policy review works. He was also appointed by the Union Ministry of Rural Development for monitoring of the rural job guarantee scheme NREGA. To his credit he has worked as an Associate professor in public administration at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussorie. Recipient of Padmashree award, Mr. Kaushal was nominated as the ‘Man of the Year’, by ‘The Week’ magazine for the year 2003. His other awards include, ‘Sat Paul Mittal National Award 2016’ conferred on him for outstanding service to Humanity, ‘Enviro Care Ambassador Award 2016’, Eleventh ‘Nani A. Palkhivala’ Award for the Protection and Preservation of Civil Liberties, 2014, ‘Invertis Green Award’ on 27th April 2013, ‘The UNESCO-NLM’ Award, 1999 to mention a few. Mr. Avdhash Kaushal mainly focused on “Contemporary Issues on Environmental Laws in Learning and Teaching”. At the outset he emphasised that it is the duty of every citizen of the nation to protect the Flora and Fauna of the ecosystem. As natural resources are depleting day by day it has become the need of the hour to insist the government to step into the matter and save the environment for future generations. Forest department is to be given power like the police force to keep a check on the forest resources from any unwanted poachers. It is the prime responsibility of the lawyers to bridge the gap between law and environment and work towards sustainable development. The session ended with a questionnaire round where he stressed that planting trees could be the best step towards most of the environmental issues.

Date: 23 July 2019 Innovative Research Methodology in Teaching And Learning (Expert: Dr. Raman Nautiyal,)

Dr. Raman Nautiyal, Scientist and a statistician ICFRE (Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education) has been working as a faculty in FRI Deemed to be University. He has also served as a visiting faculty in School of Environment and Natural Resources, Doon University for M.Sc. (Environmental Science), Pre PhD Course Work and M.Tech (Environmental Technology) programmes. Projects on various issues of forestry and environmental statistics funded by ICFRE, International Tropical Timber Organization, NOVOD Board, MoEF& CC, Central Statistics Office, etc and two forest sector reports, which is under approval of MoEF& CC are to his credit. His area of Research Interest includes demand and supply of forest products, eco-system goods and services, sampling designs for forestry and environmental research. He has conducted several training programmes in various aspects of Statistics like Exploratory Analysis, Designing experiments, Multivariate Analysis, Research Methodology, etc. Dr. Raman Nautiyal pontificated on the theme “Innovative Research Methodology in Teaching and Learning” mainly focusing on Law & Statistics. He began stating that the basis of statistical findings is data and that data in turn helps us to come to an inference. This was followed by a lucid explanation on the differences between inference& Conclusion. Best presentation of any statistical data could be through graphical representation. He further discussed on the various Statistical methods in Research, Measurement scales and Testing Hypothesis. He further explained the need of pilot survey for a sample estimation. The session proved to be an enlightening one on statistics and its nuances.

24 July,2019“Effective class Teaching: Role of Innovation and Incorporation of Ideas” 

(Expert: Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna)

Prof.(Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, Principal &Dean of Law College Dehradun, the key note speaker of the day, has  a working experience of 37 years of Teaching, Research and Administrative experience. His expertise is in the field of Constitutional Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution. As an educationist and Philanthropist, Dr. Bahuguna has organised several National Debates, Seminars, Conclaves, Conferences and several pro bono publico activities. Adding to this, he is also the recipient of several awards and honours conferred on him. A few to mention, Certificate of Appreciation by His Excellence Dr. K.K. Paul, Hon’ble Governor of Uttarakhand for Organizing Blood Donation Camp in the year 2017, President’s Appreciation Award 2017 of IMA Blood Bank Society of Uttarakhand foroutstanding contribution in Voluntary Blood Donation Movement. Every year Law College Dehradun organises Legal Awareness Camp under the able leadership of Dr. Bahuguna which stands proof for hissocial concern. 

The session began with his discourse on “Effective class Teaching: Role of Innovation and Incorporation of Ideas”. He stated that every phenomenon is a teacher, and it depends upon the individual as how we make use of it to learn things. Teaching and learning do not have a precise definition or methodology as it is a dynamic one which has to be done to suit the need of the audience. The prowess of a good teacher lies in the rationality behind the concept proved with evidence. He also stated that law is required to regulate the conduct of the people in a society and should be dynamic enough to keep up with the pace and needs of mankind. 

Teaching Through Case Studies (Expert: Prof. (Dr.) Poonam Rawat, Date: 25 July 2019)

Prof. Rawat, who also holds the position of Head of the Department in Law College Dehradun enlightened the participants of this 14- Days FDP on the topic, “Teaching through Case Studies”. She emphasised on the need of innovative teaching tools and provides insight on the fact that how case studies have now become an integral part of legal teaching.

Art of Teaching and Youth Awakening (Expert: Dr. Suchismita Sengupta Pandey, Date: 26 July 2019)

Dr. Suchismita Sengupta Pandey, Additional Commissioner, Civil supplies, and Consumer Protection (Govt. of Uttarakhand) Dehradun & Member Secretary, Food Security Commission of Uttarakhand was the Keynote speaker of the day. She has also served in various capacities namely, Deputy Director, Institute of Management Development of U.P., Technical Director U.P. Police Vigilant Department, and served as Secretary RTI Commission of Uttarakhand state. Being a renowned speaker in the academic arena, Dr. Suchsmita has authored, “Swami Vivekanand’s Footprints on Uttarakhand Himalayas’ – a book released by the then Hon’ble Governor Aziz Qureshi in the year 2013 at Raj Bhawan. She has delivered numerous Guest lectures and presentations on various topics inspiring the young minds. Dr. Suchismita Sengupta Pandey began her sermon by conveying her ‘Guru Purnima’ wishes to the teaching fraternity. She stated that there is a divine relationship between a teacher and a student and India is the only land which reveres it. The session was centred around Swami Vivekananda and his ideologies. Discussing on the race of human society for money and fame she stressed that one should intend to become a good citizen of the nation with a humanitarian nature. Swami Vivekananda was a man of erudition who toured the whole nation from Almora to Kanyakumari. This Magnanimous personality had Nationalism in his spirit and blood and his message on universal brotherhood and self-awakening remains relevant even today amidst several political turmoil. Expressing concern on the issue of farmers suicide, Dr.Suchismita felt that education should not be centred around academics and related activities , but should have a practical approach towards life, inculcating social responsibility in the young generation. The evocative speech of the expert was captivating and thought provoking. 

Role of Effective Assignments in Teaching (Expert: Prof. (Dr.) Sanjeev Kumar Shah, Date: 27 July 2019)

Prof. Shah who is a renowned scholar and celebrated researcher took the session on “Role of Effective Assignments in Teaching” He asserted that Assignment is a necessary part of the teaching and learning process, helping us measure whether our students have really learned what we want them to learn. While exams and quizzes are certainly favourite, and useful methods of assessment, out of class assignments (written or otherwise) can offer similar insights into our students’ learning. He also emphasised that just as creating a reliable test takes thoughtfulness and skill, so does creating meaningful and effective assignments. 

How to Bridge Gap Between Research And Teaching (Expert: Mr. Amrendra Singh, Date: 28 July, 2019)

As a part of Faculty Development Program – 2019, efforts were taken to Bridge the Gap between Research and Teaching. Mr. Amrendra Singh, Assistant manager, Manupatra was the keynote speaker of the day, who gave a brief on the technicalities of accessing ‘Manupatra’, an online legal database. This is the only company in the market to cover maximum information. It includes judgements given in Supreme court, High courts, and federal courts. It has a rich database with any kind of articles and journals, Legal maxims and Legal Phrases. It carries all milestone judgements pronounced, which will enable any legal researcher to avail data on any contemporary issues. Besides this, ‘lawskills.in’, A skill paced: e-Learning platform an initiative by Manupatra offers knowledge and practical skills in the chosen area of specialization. Thus, the session proved to clarify the basic as well as the most complicated issues in using the online database.

Enterprise Resource Planning and Its Use In Academics (Expert: Dr. N.C. Uniyal, Date: 29 July, 2019)

Dr. Uniyal holds the position of Head ERP in Uttaranchal University and had vast experience of its use in academics. He took a session titled, Enterprise Resource Planning and its use in Academics” and emphasised that ERPs always empowers educational institutions of varied sizes and operations to focus on delivering high-quality education without having to think or worry about the administrative process. It enables educational institutions to take care of their entire administrative tasks and assists in repetitive resource-intensive activities through seamless automation. Dr. Uniyal demonstrated that how the help from ERP can be taken to accomplish various academic goals

Emerging Interdisciplinary Teaching and Its Need (Expert: Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh, Date: 30 July 2019)

Prof.(Dr.) Ajay Singh’s introduction to the field of research is not new. He is renowned as an academic scientist of innovative idea in academia. His session titled, “Emerging Interdisciplinary Teaching and its Need” was enlightening for all the participants of this FDP. He asserted that Interdisciplinary instruction helps students develop their cognitive abilities – brain-based skills and mental processes that are needed to carry out various academic tasks. He further stated that Interdisciplinary instruction helps students understand why conflicts commonly arise over; the causes and consequences of an issue and, the ideal way for policy to address the issue of concern. When learning is confined to a single disciplinary perspective ambiguity is often considered either a shortcoming of the analytical framework or evidence that assumptions need to be adopted to provide a clear prediction

Bloom Taxonomy And Its Use In Academics (Expert: Dr. Vandana Joshi, Date: 31 July 2019)

Dr. Vandana took session on “Bloom Taxonomy and its use in Academics” and discussed the evolution of Bloom Taxonomy and why its implementation is so important in the field of academics. She added that the goal of an educator’s using Bloom’s taxonomy is to encourage higher-order thought in their students by building up from lower-level cognitive skills. Behavioral and cognitive learning outcomes are given to highlight how Bloom’s taxonomy can be incorporated into larger-scale educational goals or guidelines. She also emphasised on the application of the Bloom Taxonomy by quoting that Taxonomies are developed to provide a framework for organizing a continuum along an underlying structure.

SMARTER WAY TO LEGAL RESEARCH (Expert: Mr. A. Agarwal, Date: 01 August)

The technical session of the day began with Mr. Agarwal from ‘LexisNexis’, a platform providing computer-assisted legal research services. The expert began his discourse stating, ‘Information and technology in the right hands is the right way to build a nation’. Lexisnexis has a range of software services and products designed to fuel the interests of legal professions. In addition to this it also has a legal library stocked with the most acknowledged law journals. The lecture was so captivating as Mr. Agarwal clearly demonstrated the faculty members to get hands on relevant and beneficial information through patented legal research innovations. 

Rising Demand of Empirical Research In Social Sciences (Expert: Prof. (Dr.) Pradeep Suri, Date: 02 August, 2019)

Dr. Suri started his speech on Rising Demand of Empirical Research in Social Sciences by stating that in the course of the nineteenth century empirical social research became a regular and organized endeavor. He asserted that most of it was centered on the ‘social question’ and intimately linked with governmental agencies and reform movements. He also emphasised upon the various characteristics of empirical research and enlightens the participants about the need of empirical research in contemporary research era. Dr. Suri was of the view that Empirical research is important in today’s world because most people believe in something only that they can see, hear, or experience. It is used to validate multiple hypotheses and increase human knowledge and continue doing it to keep advancing in various fields.

Valedictory Session

The Fourteen-day Faculty Development Program ended with a valedictory session where Dr. Suchismita Sengupta Pandeywas the chief guest of the occasion. The certificates were issued by the chief guest and the Dean of the college. Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna in his speech rendered his heartfelt thanks to the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor for their moral support in organizing the event and all the resource persons who inspired the audience with their personality and intellectual discourse as well. He also opined that all the sessions enabled to refresh and rekindle the essential research skills and motivated the faculty members to apply the newly acquired skills to enhance their research ability as well as their classroom teaching skills in guiding the scholars.

The patrons of the event were Shri Jitender Joshi hon’ble Chancellor of Uttaranchal University and Vice Chancellor Prof. N.K. Joshi. The event was successfully steered by Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna as the Director of the program along with his crew Dr. Poonam Rawat, HOD Law and Dr. Suhkwinder Singh as the Convener.The entire session wasdetailed and anchored by Dr. Lakshmi Priya.
