Law College Dehradun Organises a Seminar on Mental Health Issues and Challenges

Law College Dehradun, the faculty of Uttaranchal University organised a seminar on Mental Health: Issues and Challenges, under the aegis of the Student Counselling Cell on 11 October 2022. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr Shobhit Garg, HoD & Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Shri Guru Ram Rai Medical College. This event was graced by the presence of Dr Rajesh Bahuguna, Dean Law College & Pro Vice-Chancellor of Uttaranchal University, and Dr Poonam Rawat, HoD. The event commenced with the arrival of the guest at 10:30 A.M., lighting of the lamp and University Kulgeet.

At the outset, Prof (Dr) Rajesh Bahuguna introduced the keynote speaker followed by a technical session by the keynote speaker Dr Shobhit Garg. He made the session interactive by defining mental health and the symptom by which students can monitor themselves and make out whether they are suffering from good or poor mental health. Dr Garg explained effectively extreme high and low emotions, sleep issues, body distortion, hormonal problems, hopelessness and helplessness, depression, anxiety disorder, OCD (Obsessive, Compulsive Disorder) and other significant issues that were discussed in detail. In between the talk, Dr Garg took the queries of the students and explained to the students the possible sources of stress among the College students. Moving further, Dr. Garg told the students the Mantra of dealing with stress. He explained to the students to make meaningful connections, exercise daily, creates short-term goals, lives in the present condition, takes short breaks to keep their mind and body healthy, engages in self-compassion, challenges negative self-talk, improvement in management skills and if the problem persists, talk to a mental health professional. He also told students to stay away from smoking, drinking alcohol, and drugs which is creating more stress among students.

The event ended with a vote of thanks by Member Secretary, Dr Shikha Uniyal Gairola followed by the National Anthem.
