Law College Dehradun conducts Women Empowerment Forum with the Daughters of Uttarakhand

NSS Wing of Uttaranchal University and Legal Aid Centre, under the aegis of Law College Dehradun organized an interesting and educative programme “Dialogue with Daughters of Uttarakhand” on 12th of November 2018, with an aim to promote gender equity amidst the students and commemorate the 18th Anniversary of Uttarakhand. Hon’ble Chancellor of the University Shri Jitender Joshi was the Chief Guest of the occasion and Prof.(Dr.) N.K. Joshi, Vice-Chancellor – Uttaranchal University, Ms. Chitra Kanojia, Deputy Director of Economics & Statistics Planning Department, Uttarakhand, Wing Commander (Retd.) Anupama Joshi and Dr. Ekta Uniyal, Deputy Commandant (Home Guard), Uttarakhand were the distinguished guests. The programme was inaugurated with the lighting of auspicious lamp. Chancellor of the University Shri Jitender Joshi felicitated the ‘Daughters of Uttarakhand’ on the occasion.

Principal and Dean Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, extended a cordial welcome to all the dignitaries and in his inaugural address presented an extensive historical background of Uttarakhand State Movement. He stated the rationale of the movement which had the objective of establishing a Hill State for the upliftment of the people of the hill within the constitutional framework of India. He recalled the sacrifices involved in the various stages of Uttarakhand Movement and his active participation in it. This was followed by ‘Dialogue with Daughters of Uttarakhand’. The distinguished panel lists had presented their respective views on different aspects of women empowerment.

Ms. Chitra Kanojia, Deputy Director (Planning), State of Uttarakhand, had elaborately discussed socio-economic developmental aspects of women which constitute the core of women empowerment. She explained that the occupational structure was gradually shifting in favor of women and its pace might increase with the change in traditional mindset. She emphasized on the need of change in the thought process of every individual which would enable us to empower women economically and socially.

Wing Commander (Retd.) Anupama Joshi is an influential motivator and has given a renowned TEDx talk on Women and Battle Within. She dealt with the topic “Women Empowerment with special reference to discrimination on the basis of sex.” She had presented an interesting account of her struggle for securing gender justice for women in the armed forces resulting into a landmark judgment of High Court in favor of women of armed forces to take up assignments at par with their male counterparts.

Dr. Ekta Uniyal, Deputy Commandant (Home Guard) Uttarakhand had analyzed the ethical aspects related to the issue of women empowerment. Her philosophical discourse centered round the overall integration of various ethical values related to women empowerment. She was emphatic that ethical values related to women empowerment should not be culture specific but universal in application irrespective of caste and culture.

The thought provoking speech given by the distinguished speakers was followed by a question & answer session. The students who witnessed the event had raised some challenging and interesting questions which were responded logically and intellectually by the guests.

Dr. Anil Dixit had recited his poem based on Uttarakhand Movement followed by Vote of Thanks delivered by Ashutosh Singh, Vice President of LAC Society, Law College Dehradun.
