Bachelor of Optometry (B.Opto)

Optics is the branch of science involving the structure, function, and operation of the human eye. Optometry is the science of eye and vision care including eye examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system. It can also be defined as the science of eye equipment (including lenses and spectacles) aimed at improving the vision of the human eye. This involves removal of all kinds of obstacles of sight which an individual may suffer from. Optometrists are health professionals who have specialization in eye care. They also provide preoperative and postoperative care to individual suffering from cataract. Often optometrists discover eye conditions caused by systemic problems and refer their patients to other medical doctors.

Bachelor of Optometry is an undergraduate program concerning eye care. It is a four-year course containing three years of learning and a year of internship in clinical experience. The program is curated with the objective of developing a multipurpose ophthalmic manpower at the paramedical level. The core training and practical exposure offered in the course is designed to prepare eligible candidates for providing competent services in capacities such as Optician, Optometrist, Refractionist and Ophthalmic Assistant. 

Since the eye is one of the most important human organs, optometrists are assigned the responsibility of leading others from darkness to light and are offered a wide range of lucrative career options both in India and abroad. This is a dynamic and challenging career, which allows one to nurse people, achieve personal growth, engender community respect, possess job flexibility and ensure financial stability. A graduate of this stream can serve the community in urban, semi-urban and rural settings in private, semi-governmental and governmental sectors.

Successful graduates of the course interested in higher studies may pursue PhD or M.Sc. in the subject.

Eligibility:
  • 10+2, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as imperative subjects.
  • Minimum marks 50% for general category and 45% for SC/ST category

Admission Procedure:
  • Admission is based on merit computed on the basis of marks secured in qualifying examination. University also conducts interviews of all applicants before admitting the eligible candidates.
  • Out of the total intake, 40% seats are allotted to students of Uttarakhand under the State Quota and the rest are open to students from All India. In case the allotted percentage of seats of State Quota remains vacant, it will be filled by All India students.
