World Tourism Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and gusto at Department of Hotel Management, UIM, Uttaranchal University on 27th September 2020. World Tourism Day was celebrated online this year, amid the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, but this has not dampened the enthusiasm among students despite limitations.
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the importance of tourism in affecting the social, cultural, political and economic values of international community. In current times, it is important to raise awareness about the tourism sector given that 90% of World Heritages Sites closed as a result of the pandemic and young people in rural communities are three times more likely to be unemployed.
The theme of World Tourism Day this year is “Tourism and Rural Development” as countries across the world depend on the sector to drive recovery. “Tourism and Rural Development” celebrates the sector’s unique ability to drive economic development and provide opportunities outside of big cities, including in those communities that would otherwise be left behind.
Under the guidance of faculty members, the student’s club “le sommelier, Department of Hotel Management, liaison with all the students and together they organised an online poster making competition.
The event started with a welcome address by Mr. Manish Badoni, HOD-Department of Hotel Management He spoke about the significance of the day for all hospitality professionals, emphasizing on the theme for this year. He also emphasized on how providing a safe and secure environment to tourists today is as important as exhibiting a friendly welcome. He spoke about how travel educates people and makes them global citizens.
The online session was joined by Faculty Members, namely, Mr.Surendra Singh Bhakuni, Mr. Hitendra Singh Chauhan &Mr. Deepak Rawat. The poster making competition was based on the theme of “Tourism and Rural Development”. Winners were awarded with an e-certificate of Appreciation by Mr. Manish Badoni, HOD-Department of Hotel Management. The campaign concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr.Surendra
