Media Club organizes Guest Lecture on “Nuances of Crime Reporting: Transitions in the Digital Era with Shri Shashi Shekhar

The Media Club of Journalism and Mass Communication, School of Liberal Arts organized a guest lecture on Nuances of Crime Reporting: Transitions in the Digital Era on 14 March 2022. The guest speaker, Mr Shashi Shekhar, Senior Reporter, Rashtriya Sahara, Dehradun, discussed how technology has led to tremendous changes in the reporting culture especially in the Crime Beat. He stated that a good crime reporter must have a strong memory. S/he may not keep a diary but must have such strong observation power so that the person can report the incident exactly according to the chronology. A crime reporter must be objective. He added that due to digitalization, the information dissemination is faster today but reliability stands as an issue. He emphasized that crime reporters must have strong fact checking abilities, so that s/he can check authenticity of the source of the incident or accident. He discussed the challenges that a crime reporter faces due to the onset of technology. He concluded by highlighting that the development of technology has been an aid for the reporters overall.

At the end students asked multiple questions which led to healthy discussions and debates regarding various issues like ethics in crime reporting, safety of a crime reporter and role of gatekeeping in crime news. HoD, Dr Jitendra Sinha proposed the vote of thanks and appreciated the patient listening and participation of students. Ms Anjulika Ghoshal hosted the session. Ms Smriti Uniyal, Mr Ved Prakash Bhatt and Mr Pawan Dabral were also present in the session.
