Law College Dehradun Organizes an Introspective Debate on Uniform Civil Code

Law College Dehradun, Faculty of Uttaranchal University organized an interesting intellectual discussion cum debating competition on 14 September 2022, celebrating the auspicious occasion of “Hindi Diwas”. The topic of the discussion was “THBT Uniform Civil code is the need of the hour.” The Vice-President of the university, Prof (Dr) Satbir Singh Sehgal was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr S K Shah, Shri Kumar Ashutosh and Dr Bhawna Arora were present as the judges of the competition. 

The competition channeled through many rounds and reached the final stage witnessing a reflective and surgical intellectual discussion keeping the audience spellbound throughout the session. Participants supporting the motion maintained that Article 44 guided uniform civil code is a practical necessity in the contemporary scenario emphasizing upon uniformity of laws for the entire nation. However, participants opposing the motion contended that the same would be an onslaught upon the secular fabric of the nation. It would alter the marriage, divorce, adoption, property and personal laws adversely impacting the aspects of social justice.

In a tough contest, Ms Satakshi Sharma and Amrit Raj Dubey were declared winners and Runnerup respectively by the judges. Prof (Dr) Rajesh Bahuguna, Dean, Law College Dehradun mentioned that the intellectual participation of youth in pressing socio-economic issues of the county is a positive sign for the country.

Prof Sehgal congratulated the students, faculty members, and organizers on the occasion of “Hindi Diwas.” He observed that organizing the debate on Uniform Civil Code and the Uttarakhand state initiative for the same are synchronous and a rare coincidence. He also noticed the intention of students in favour of the Uniform Civil Code.
