M.Sc Biotechnology

Biotechnology refers to application of biological tools and scientific techniques to animal, plant and microbial species for their improvement (qualitative as well as quantitative) along with development of process and products with respect to health, environment, agriculture, industry, etc. In recent past biotechnology has been identified as a prominent field of life science owing to its interdisciplinary approach and widespread applications.

About the program:

M.Sc. Biotechnology is a two year program spread into four semesters. The curriculum comprises of comprise core courses, open elective and discipline specific electives. Core courses provide conceptual knowledge and experimental learning pertaining to basic and applied field of biotechnology through different teaching learning methods. Open electives target skill enhancement and discipline elective courses are specifically designed to provide skills pertaining to application of biotechnological tools and techniques in various fields including industry, agriculture, environment, health and others. Industrial visits, participation in seminar/conference, training programs impart additional technical skills. A crucial component of fourth semester is dissertation; each student is allotted a supervisor to conduct research in the field of interest of the student. The objective of dissertation is to impart skill to design and develop protocols, conduct experiment, interpret data and comprehend scientific writing skills.

Agriculture, health and medicine, industries, health centers, NGO’s, research institutes are among major recruiters for biotechnology professionals,  After perusing M.Sc. biotechnology students can avail widespread career options depending upon their interest. Research positions in government and private organizations, scientific writing assistance (content writer), biochemical analyst, various opportunities in industries (production, quality control, quality assurance, marketing) including pharmaceuticals, fermentation industry, food industry and others, entrepreneurship/startups related to plants, mushroom, vermiculture and others are another career option. Beside widespread job opportunities students can choose research as career. Pursuing M.Sc. Biotechnology makes students eligible to appear in various competitive examination including CSIR-NET, DBT-NET, ARS-NET, GATE and other examinations conducted by various research institutions and universities.

Admission Procedure:
  • The admission is based on merit, computed on the basis of marks secured in qualifying examination. University also conducts interviews of all applicants before admitting the eligible candidates.
  • Out of the total intake, 40% seats are allotted to students of Uttarakhand under the State Quota and the rest are open to students from all India. In case the allotted percentage of seats of State Quota remains vacant, it will be filled by All India students.
