Law College Dehradun felicitates Neera Sinam for topping the Manipur Judicial Services

Law College Dehradun, Faculty of Uttaranchal University takes pride in felicitating Ms Neera Sinam on 22 December 2022, for topping Manipur Judicial Services in the first attempt. She not only secured the first position in this examination but also got the distinction of becoming the youngest judge of Manipur Judicial Services at the age of 24. Hon’ble Chancellor Shri. Jitender Joshi accorded a grand welcome to Ms Neera with a bouquet and a memento. He said that with this success Ms Neera has not only brought honor to her family and state but also to Law College Dehradun and Uttaranchal University. He said that it is a matter of pride for our students to be judges in the North-Eastern states of the country. He advised the students to work hard by taking inspiration from Ms Neera.

Prof (Dr) Rajesh Bahuguna, Dean Law College Dehradun, quoted the famous saying, “Coming events cast their shadows before”, that the saying is 100% true for Ms Neera Sinam. Ms Neera is a debater of immense caliber and has a long list of achievements. Along with being the best speaker in Law College Dehradun, she was the winner of the Jamia Millia Islamia National Debate Competition in 2018 and 2019 consecutively. In 2018, she was the winner of the Sardar Bhagwan Singh National Debate Competition. In 2017, she was the winner of the RTI debate organized by ONGC in 2018 besides winning the coveted trophy of AMU in 2017. She is also the winner of Balashri Award 2008 and the Chacha Nehru Award.

On this occasion, a special session was organized for the Alumna Neera, who shared tips and tricks to the Students to ace judicial service examinations. She talked about the preliminary exam, main exam, and interview separately and shared her experiences. She insisted on making class notes and re-reading before exams from the first year itself and advised to read Bare Acts not only to mug up but also to understand it in a proper way. She also insisted on never ignoring English and General Knowledge subjects. Quoting the judgments of the Supreme Court in your answer proves to be icing on the cake. Ms Neera said that during her studies at Law College Dehradun, the guidance of the faculty members, the co-operation of classmates, and the educational material and state-of-the-art resources available at Law College Dehradun had a special contribution in her success.

Uttaranchal University launched “UU Vritant” magazine

On December 17, 2022, courtesy of Uttaranchal University’s media club “Pratyaksh”, a half-yearly magazine named “UU Vritant” was launched by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (USJMC). The Chancellor of the University, Shri Jitender Joshi was the chief Guest at the magazine launch ceremony. Shri Kunwar Raj Asthana, Chief Editor, Divya Himgiri was present as Guest of Honour of the program. The program started with the lighting of the lamp, along with poetry recitation by the Sahatras.

Shri Jitender Jopshi, Chancellor appreciated Media Club Coordinator Anjulika Ghoshal and Editor “UU Vritant” Smriti Uniyal and also suggested publishing a newsletter in future. He said that a TV and radio studio has been set up with all modern resources and techniques in the university so that students can get practical and technical training related to journalism and mass communication before entering the media world. In his address, the Guest of Honour Mr. Asthana told the students about the nuances of writing and editing, as well as told the importance of Hindi writing, inspiring the students to move towards Hindi journalism. Along with this, Ruhi Qadri, teacher of Journalism and Mass Communication, recited a poem titled “Betiyon Se Hai Zamana”. Media Club Coordinator Anjulika Ghoshal conducted the program very well. Along with this, Smriti Uniyal, editor of “UU Vritant” informed about the whole process of the idea becoming a magazine.

University’s Vice President, Prof (Dr) Satbir Singh Sehgal, Vice- Chancellor, Prof (Dr) Dharam Budhi, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof (Dr) Rajesh Bahuguna, Dean Student Welfare & Liberal Arts, Prof (Dr) Shravan Kumar, Dean UIPS, Prof (Dr) Vikash Jakhmola were also present on this occasion.

Law College Dehradun Women Cell & ICC organizes a Panel Discussion

Law College Dehradun, Faculty of Uttaranchal University, organised a panel discussion on the topic, “Discrimination against Women”, under the aegis of Women Cell & ICC on 9 December 2022. A single moment can spark a revolution, collective actions can transform laws, creative expression can change attitudes and an invention can alter the course of history. With this objective, the discussion was organized in the presence of Prof (Dr) Rajesh Bahuguna, Pro Vice-Chancellor & Dean, Law College Dehradun and Prof Poonam Rawat, Head of the Department among other faculty members and students of the institution.

The event commenced with the University Kulgeet and an oath to follow traffic rules and follow them always as per the directions given by the government.  Following this, the Panel discussion began on Political discrimination against women by Prachi
Panwar & Simran Chauhan, where they discussed the significant role of women in politics, international conventions related to women, and the different articles in the Indian constitution. The next discussion was on religious discrimination which was discussed by Krinjal and Muskan Jha. Krinjal began from Sabrimala’s judgment and various other religious discrimination including Haji Ali Durga case. Gender Discrimination was elaborated by Sanvi Singh and Arya Singh who spoke about the different provisions of the Indian Constitution which emphasize equality including schemes like Beti Bachao and Beti PadaoUjjwala scheme etc. Arya Singh expressed her views on the child marriage custom which is prevailing even at present in different rural as well as urban areas.

In the end, Prof Rajesh Bahuguna addressed the gathering and explained the different rights of women. He also averred that gender discrimination exists in society and brought to light the proactive role of the judiciary by taking the example of Supreme Court Judgments. His address emphasized the need to follow the traffic rules by every individual.

The program was concluded by a vote of thanks and the national anthem.

Puneet Sagar Abhiyan

Sub Unit Uttaranchal University 29 UK Bn, National Cadet Corps (NCC) Dehradun conducted a cleanliness drive on 09 December 2022 at Tons River, Arcadia Grant Premnagar Dehradun. To tackle the issue of plastic pollution and achieve the universal goal of clean water bodies through ‘Puneet Sagar Abhiyan’.

Event Objectives:

  1. a)To inculcate a sense of responsibility within our youths to protect the environment for future generations to live a long and healthy life
  2. b)The campaign aims to propagate the message of the importance of clean water bodies amongst the local population.
  3. c)It seeks to educate locals and sensitize about ‘Swachh Bharat’.

Those present on the occasion were Lt. Nitin Duklan, PI Staff Mr. Sarweshwar Prasad, PTI Mr. Jay Rana, and 48 NCC Cadets.

Mumbai Cha Superhero: Mumbai Dabbawalas

A team of 11 Students led by Ms Sakshi Koli and Mr Manan Gupta of BA 3rd year, School of Liberal Arts participated in the guest lecture organized by Doon Business School on 26th November,2022.

The topic of the lecture was Mumbai Cha Superhero: Mumbai DabbawalasThe resource person was Mr Ritesh Andre, from Mumbai Dabbawala. Mr. Ritesh Andre is a spokesperson and currently represents the complete community of the Dabbawalas, in Mumbai. The lecture was attended by students from various colleges and universities where eleven students from SLA, Uttaranchal University participated with great zeal and enthusiasm.

The lecture was specifically about the introduction of a start-up idea, and the working of an organization. It also focused on entrepreneurial development, and management skills in a business and emphasized on many difficulties faced by an entrepreneur or a venture holder.  The session was a source of great learning by experience sharing.

Guest Lecture on “Variation of Atmospheric Parameters and Its Impact on Weather and Climate”

The Department of Physics under the aegis of the School of Applied and Life Sciences, Uttaranchal University organized a guest lecture for the students of BSc (Hons) Physics and MSc Physics on the topic “Variation of Atmospheric Parameters and Its Impact on Weather and Climate” on 6 December 2022.

The Resource person was Dr Alok Sagar Gautam. He is one of the Prominent Young Researchers in the Department of Physics at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (A Central University), Srinagar, Garhwal, University, Uttarakhand. He has pursued his Ph D from “Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology” Pune and has also received the top Junior Associateship from International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy.

Prof (Dr) Ajay Singh, Dean, SALS and Prof (Dr) B S Rawat, and Dr Sanjeev Kimothi from R & I, welcomed the resource person. Dr Hemlata Sharma introduced the topic of the day and the guest speaker to the audience. The resource person, Dr Alok Sagar Gautam introduced students to India’s Highest Cloud Observatory (HCO) at Swami Ram Teerth Campus, HNB Garhwal University, and Srinagar Uttarakhand and explained the area of Cloud Physics/Dynamics. It will be helpful for making the assessment of the weather in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand India. His lecture was followed by a question and answer session, where he answered several interesting questions asked by first and final-year students of MSc and B Sc (Hons) Physics.

This Guest Lecture turned out to be a huge success with the support of Dr Reena Dhyani, Dr Hemlata Sharma, and Dr Narinder Kumar. The event was graced by HOD and other faculty members of the Department. About 40 students in Physics were present in the lecture.

The Guest lecture proved to be extremely beneficial and informative for the students and helped them to gather information about the atmospheric parameters and cloud dynamics in Srinagar, Garhwal valley. The students extended their gratitude to the department for facilitating the organization of the lecture.

School of Agriculture (SOA) celebrated World Soil Day on 5th December 2022

School of Agriculture (SOA) celebrated World Soil Day on 5th December 2022 to draw attention to the importance of healthy soil for sustaining life on Earth. The theme for World Soil Day 2022 was ‘Soil: Where Food Begins’. The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing growing challenges in soil management, increasing soil awareness, and encouraging societies to improve soil health. Prof (Dr) M P Singh, Dean SOA welcomed everyone and shed some light on soil health in the beginning to set the tone of the session. In the event, students of BSc (Hons) Agriculture expressed their views about soil health. It was quoted during the event that taking care of our planet is very important because it is the only planet we know for sure that has life. It is also the only one capable of sustaining life. As human beings, it is our responsibility to take care of what we do not know how to make and what we depend on for survival. Students of UG and PG Degree Programme of Agriculture gave speeches on soil and nature, recited poems to spread awareness among all.  After all performances, the Dean of Agriculture, Head of Department, Event Coordinator, faculty members, and students planted trees. Also, they took a pledge to plant more trees in the coming New Year. The event was concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr Rajendra Prasad, HoD SOA. The event was really worthy and fruitful for all. The Dean and Head of the Department praised the effort of everyone.

Gold medallist winner of UIM at State Level

Uttaranchal Institute of Management, Uttaranchal University has another accolade to its credit. Mohd Abrar,   a BBA final year student who won 4 Gold medals in the state-level   Arm Wrestling Championship Competition 2022 held by Uttarakhand Government. The Chancellor, Uttaranchal University, Shri Jitender Joshi and Dean UIM, Prof (Dr) Pradeep Suri congratulated him on his triumph. The competition was held on 04 December 2022 at Town Hall, Dehradun.

National Webinar on “Future Career Prospects of Digital Marketing”

With an intent to bolster the growth of the students and to familiarise them with the future prospects of Digital Marketing, Uttaranchal Institute of Management (UIM), Uttaranchal University, organised an online National webinar on the topic “Future Career Prospects of Digital Marketing” on December 2nd, 2022. This program was an endeavour to deeply enrich the knowledge of all participants and provide them with career insights on Digital Marketing with specific reference to the Insurance industry.

The session was held on 2 December 2022 at 3.00 p.m. Mr. Aftab Siddiqui, National head, Internet Marketing at Royal Sundaram General Insurance Limited was present as the Keynote Speaker on the occasion while our Head of Department, Dr Tilottama Singh welcomed the guest speaker and motivated the students for the session.

At the outset, Dean, UIM, Prof (Dr) Pradeep Suri addressed the gathering and welcomed the eminent keynote speaker of the day. He stated that while traditional marketing still has its place in the world, Digital marketing is quickly taking over, Thanks to affordability and analytics. He reiterated the benefit the students will acquire from the immense and versatile knowledge domain and experience of Mr Aftab Siddiqui. Sir emphasized the prospects of digital marketing giving examples of the Insurance industry.

The Speaker, Mr Aftab Siddiqui imparted knowledge to the students and focused on various key points during the session which are as follows:

  • Mr Aftab Siddiqui emphasized the various techniques of digital marketing.
  • Discussing the Royal Sundaram General Insurance Limited, in particular, he spoke about the various opportunities Digital Marketing holds in the coming future. He also emphasized on how digital marketers keep an eye on search engine optimization and keep track on how it affects website rankings.
  • He further shared with students how digital Marketing plays a significant role in decisions being taken in the service industry.

A vote of thanks to all the eminent resource persons, dignitaries, technical and supportive team, and participants was proposed by Ms. Manleenjot Kaur, Assistant Professor, UIM. Around 100 participants attended the Webinar with full zeal and enthusiasm.

Law College Dehradun emerged victorious in the Client Counselling Competition -2022 at Shoolini University

Law College Dehradun, Faculty of Uttaranchal University came out with flying colours in the Client Counselling Competition in the National Law Fest 2022, held on 01 December 2022 organized by Shoolini University, Himachal Pradesh under Centre of Clinical Legal Education & Faculty of Legal Sciences.  A team comprising of Ms Khwaish Jaggi who participated as senior counsel and Ms Shailja Raturi, who participated as junior counsel, students of BBA LLB (Hons.) represented the College. The problem of the preliminary round was related to Divorce under Hindu Law, precisely under The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 whereas the problem in the final round was that of Child Marriage, Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. The problem also revolved around the arena of Rape, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The top 5 teams from all over India participated in the final rounds and the team from Law College Dehradun put up an exemplary performance and defeated Himachal Pradesh National Law University to grab the winning trophy and bagged home a cash prize of ₹10,000. The event was highlighted by the presence of Justice Chander Bhushan Barowalia, Lokayukta, Himachal Pradesh, as the chief guest and judged the event besides former Sessions Judge BL Soni, Nishtha Jaswal, VC of Himachal Pradesh National Law University; advocate Rakeshwar Lall Sood and Prof Sanjay Sindhu, Dean and Chairman, HPU in the presence of Chancellor of Shoolini University Mr P K Khosla.
